How To Plan Your Landscape Layout

How To Plan Your Landscape Layout

While there are many fall landscaping projects you could take on right now, you could also use this time to plan your landscape layout for next year.

Summer is ending, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t more gardening and landscaping to consider. While there are many fall landscaping projects you could take on right now, you could also use this time to plan your landscape layout for next year.  It is never too early to start thinking and planning your next landscape design.

Brainstorm Your Goals

Think about what you want to get out of the space. What are you hoping to achieve with this new layout – an open area for a fire pit or a new outdoor kitchen close to the house? As with any remodel, start with listing your goals and dreams. It costs nothing to dream, so don’t hold back at this stage. Think about all of the different big and small details that would make this your dream yard – from hardscaping to specific flowers – and write it all down.

Evaluate The Space

Head outside to evaluate the space you have to work with for your design. Early fall is an excellent time to do this since the weather is less oppressive, but the ground is not covered yet. Try to evaluate the land as if you were a stranger and list the good and the bad elements. Make notes of sloped areas, or particularly shaded or sunny. Consider ways to hide or diminish the not-so-great aspects of your yard if you can’t change them outright. Similarly, any great gems, like a cute little stone path, should be highlighted in your new design to draw attention there.

Map It Out

Map out space and sketch it into your notes so that you can see what you have to work within your landscape. Your map should include property lines, the dimensions of the house, and the locations and dimensions of any elements that are not up for change. Once you have a reliable base map, you can begin playing with designs. Look at your dream list and decide what the most important elements are and determine if they can fit in the space you have. Make copies of your base map and sketch away to determine where everything goes. Once you have a good idea of what you want, finalize your plan on a clean map copy so that it is easy to read and understand. This way you have a clear picture of your ideas to follow yourself or take to a professional.
